Old character, skill lines imbalance

Hi,

Played at release, trying the game again, main is a 24 sorcerer. Made a new toon to run through the tutorial, and read some current guides. Discovered something I never knew, or maybe that has been added later on: one has to put a skill from each line onto the hotbar to gain exp in it.

I had been playing my sorcerer in a one-sided way, still a bit conffused at this time as to why would I want to invest in a zillion skills if I can only use 5 hotkeys in combat? Anyway, what I've ended up with is a Sorcerer having:

36 Storm Calling
3 Dark magic
3 Daedric Summoning
32 Destruction Staff
7 Restoration Staff

If I do indeed need for some reason to develop all skill lines, is this toon still viable if I put all 3 class lines and the 2 staff ones onto the hotbar, or the one that I have neglected will never catch up and I'd better keep playing the new character instead?

Also, if there is a good article or discussion somewhere explaining the benefits of developing all and each of the skill lines even if I can only use one skill per line, I'd appreciate a link. "eso why develop all skill lines" seems too vague to give any meaningful results :)

How are you guys playing a sorcerer, mosty "Destruction staff ability", attack, Destruction, Attack, etc.?

Thanks.

You want to level up skill lines that you want the passives in, even if you won't be using the skills. On June 2 there will be a new system called Subclassing. Read about it on the forums.

I have my summons plus a staff skill on the front bar, and all elements plus dual wield on the back. That way, I can put the super-annoying-but-useful flappy pet away whenever I want to go into town to do some shopping, tinker at the crafting stations, or drop stuff off at the bank. My character is also still levelling, and I have no idea what I'll do at the end with it (especially given sub-classing) so I usually rotate one skill out once it's levelled up to work on another.

I may swap destruction out for restoration at some point, since I'd like to have at least one character set up as a healer for group stuff. And, as mentioned above, check the passives available on each skill line, as those might be helpful to what you want to do.

You have a sixth hotkey for an Ultimate, and that comes in about level 12 in class skills. Use it during levelling, even if you intend it to be replaced by a weapon or guild skill ultimate later on.

It's very cheap (just a few thousand gold) to re-morph your skills or even remove them, which I do once a character reaches max level. You won't need to worry about skill points too much, although you get them from dungeon quests and PvP experience, as well, both of which also grant a lot of experience for your first per day (1-2 levels each), so they're good for leveling.

So I would slot one skill of each class skill line on each bar just to level it from killing enemies, quests, dolmens, etc. Just about every class wants passives or skills from all 3, so it's just convenient to level them all, at least pretty high if not to 50. If you're not sure if you need them, just one skill of each will probably prevent some regret once you look into builds. But also, have fun leveling!

Personally, for my last two skills I either do skills that I like and are fun, or skills from weapons that I don't have slotted. So if I'm using a destruction staff, I'll slot a restoration staff skill on my bar (even though I can't use it) so that both skill lines get experience. Yes, it works. And you only get experience for skills on your current bar when you gain experience, not the backbar.

Leveling is very fast in this game, so you don't need to overthink it. Even if you don't level these skills on your way to 50, it would be pretty fast to catch up if you don't mind a short experience grind. Like maybe an hour or two at most, depending on method and the experience consumables you use.
